This weeks parsha:
"and this blessing"- Deut 33:1-34:12, Joshua 1:1-18, Rev 22:1-5
1 This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced on the Israelites before his death. 2 He said:
"The LORD came from Sinai
and dawned over them from Seir;
he shone forth from Mount Paran.
He came with [a] myriads of holy ones
from the south, from his mountain slopes. [b]
3 Surely it is you who love the people;
all the holy ones are in your hand.
At your feet they all bow down,
and from you receive instruction,
4 the law that Moses gave us,
the possession of the assembly of Jacob.
5 He was king over Jeshurun [c]
when the leaders of the people assembled,
along with the tribes of Israel.
6 "Let Reuben live and not die,
nor [d] his men be few."
7 And this he said about Judah:
"Hear, O LORD, the cry of Judah;
bring him to his people.
With his own hands he defends his cause.
Oh, be his help against his foes!"
8 About Levi he said:
"Your Thummim and Urim belong
to the man you favored.
You tested him at Massah;
you contended with him at the waters of Meribah.
9 He said of his father and mother,
'I have no regard for them.'
He did not recognize his brothers
or acknowledge his own children,
but he watched over your word
and guarded your covenant.
10 He teaches your precepts to Jacob
and your law to Israel.
He offers incense before you
and whole burnt offerings on your altar.
11 Bless all his skills, O LORD,
and be pleased with the work of his hands.
Smite the loins of those who rise up against him;
strike his foes till they rise no more."
12 About Benjamin he said:
"Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him,
for he shields him all day long,
and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders."
13 About Joseph he said:
"May the LORD bless his land
with the precious dew from heaven above
and with the deep waters that lie below;
14 with the best the sun brings forth
and the finest the moon can yield;
15 with the choicest gifts of the ancient mountains
and the fruitfulness of the everlasting hills;
16 with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness
and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush.
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince among [e] his brothers.
17 In majesty he is like a firstborn bull;
his horns are the horns of a wild ox.
With them he will gore the nations,
even those at the ends of the earth.
Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim;
such are the thousands of Manasseh."
18 About Zebulun he said:
"Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
and you, Issachar, in your tents.
19 They will summon peoples to the mountain
and there offer sacrifices of righteousness;
they will feast on the abundance of the seas,
on the treasures hidden in the sand."
20 About Gad he said:
"Blessed is he who enlarges Gad's domain!
Gad lives there like a lion,
tearing at arm or head.
21 He chose the best land for himself;
the leader's portion was kept for him.
When the heads of the people assembled,
he carried out the LORD's righteous will,
and his judgments concerning Israel."
22 About Dan he said:
"Dan is a lion's cub,
springing out of Bashan."
23 About Naphtali he said:
"Naphtali is abounding with the favor of the LORD
and is full of his blessing;
he will inherit southward to the lake."
24 About Asher he said:
"Most blessed of sons is Asher;
let him be favored by his brothers,
and let him bathe his feet in oil.
25 The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,
and your strength will equal your days.
26 "There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,
who rides on the heavens to help you
and on the clouds in his majesty.
27 The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.
He will drive out your enemy before you,
saying, 'Destroy him!'
28 So Israel will live in safety alone;
Jacob's spring is secure
in a land of grain and new wine,
where the heavens drop dew.
29 Blessed are you, O Israel!
Who is like you,
a people saved by the LORD ?
He is your shield and helper
and your glorious sword.
Your enemies will cower before you,
and you will trample down their high places. [f] "
Deuteronomy 34
The Death of Moses
1 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, 2 all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, [g] 3 the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. 4 Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, 'I will give it to your descendants.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it." 5 And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said. 6 He buried him [h] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. 7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. 8 The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over.
9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit [i] of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses.
10 Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11 who did all those miraculous signs and wonders the LORD sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. 12 For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
Joshua 1
The LORD Commands Joshua
1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide: 2 "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Great Sea [a] on the west. 5 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
6 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11 "Go through the camp and tell the people, 'Get your supplies ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you for your own.' "
12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said, 13 "Remember the command that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: 'The LORD your God is giving you rest and has granted you this land.' 14 Your wives, your children and your livestock may stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, fully armed, must cross over ahead of your brothers. You are to help your brothers 15 until the LORD gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise."
16 Then they answered Joshua, "Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the LORD your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey your words, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!"
Revelation 22
The River of Life
1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

receive PRESENCE ...
be grateful for presents!
go green
the root of blessing is to kneel!
again, submission... obedience... to be stong and courageous means to fasten, bind and be alert!
HE'S ALREADY THERE!!!!
to kneel before G-d is a way of blessing him! I think Ryan, you are right, we have to get down on our knees, surrender full control to the Creator of all things...and in that I think we bless Him. I guess it works in the reverse as well. Shouldn't we be on our knees to recieve blessing, submitting to the full authority of our Lord. I think sometimes we ask for blessing while standing upright with our chests puffed out, like we deserve this!! But what I think God is really saying is just surrender to me and all the blessing will be yours, come to me humbly.
On another note, God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous three times in the beginning of the book of Joshua. This "be strong, be courageous" is the hebrew word Chazak. I think God continues to chazak us each and everyday with the blessings that surround us. I think he says to us "be strong, be courageous" and kneel before me, submit your full will to me for I will bless you richly. I think it is also our responsibility as community to chazak one another on a regular basis. I think we so often get caught up in what people are doing wrong, that we forget to congratulate them on the things they are doing well. We should constantly be repeating chazak to those who surround us. After all, isn't that what the body of Christ is all about. When the hand gets tired, should the foot spur it on.
Finally, i just found out that this is the year that the Israelites provide sabbath for the land. That means no farming for Jews in Israel...talk about kneeling down before G-d. These people fully trust that G-d will bless them in their obedience.
Just some ramblings...take them or leave them.
-Favorite Verse: Rev 22:4- They will see his face and his name will be on their foreheads. The accursed to restoration and blessing
-Duet 33: 9-10: Mark 3:31-35: Give up family to follow his commandments
-Fist time Moses mentions the burning bush.
-Joshua 4:15-16/ Duet 34: Caleb/Moses have strength left at their death
-Moses does not enter the land because of Meribah—Numbers 20:10-13, he is rash with his giftedness (and lips Ps 106:32-33)
-To be strong and courageous- Hazak…community tells Joshua also to be strong Isaiah 41: 6-7.(Goes along with Brooke's comment about the "foot.)
-Joshua son of nun will lead them to the land of rest (Nun-root of Manuach)
-Revelations is all about life
Yesterday, Colton and i just read Joshua 1 together. I asked him, "What's God's goal for humanity according to this powerful, transitionary and pivotal point in the history of Israel?" He said, "Test of faith!" I asked him about promised blessings (We talked a lot about the specific promised blessings in our own lives and the uncertainty of the land at Riverside too...), and Colton replied, "My blessings are a deep community of brothers and sisters of the Lord who want to deepen their discipleship." It's interesting that the "strength and courage" found in Joshua 1 was all about being fully present for one another. As God is fully present for us, he asks the same in return, one to another. All the Israelite tribes were called to work as one, courageous body rooted to their God and his commandments. Do we really challenge one another and march into battle together? Or, do we say, "This is mine! I'll do it myself, my way!"? God promises us things throughout our life. If God's goal according to this passage is to test the faith of the Israelite community, what was God's desire for them? I wholeheartedly believe God wanted Shalom for his people. This was to be a peace that was internal AND external. But community is connected. This is just like Paul's language to the Corinthian church, "Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?" (1 Cor. 6:14 - Yes, the context was about sexual immorality, but I find that it's interesting that even an act as intimately private as sex, has huge ramifications and implications for the ENTIRE BODY OF CHRIST!). We are made for God, and He longs for us to enter His rest. I know this sounds simple, but I wonder why we (professed Christians in America) are so BAD at striving to live as a UNITED PEOPLE who hunger for authentic community. Let's learn to be strong together, binding the Shema upon every word and breath and footstep. Life is a blessing. Each step we take is a gift from God. He is with us wherever we go; He simply asks us to be strong and courageous, rooted in love, one with another!
Shalom,
Ryan
